My Story

My Background

When I was young I grew up in a house with a big garden which led down to a field I liked to explore. My brother and sister were much older than me, so I spent a lot of time by myself exploring the woods opposite. I liked discovering new places, and this has never changed for me to this day.
I've enjoyed reading books by Bill Bryson where he talked about his travels in his books ‘Big Country’ and ‘Small Island’. I always liked the idea of travelling, and people have been interested to hear about where I've been.

This is why I decided to have this website. I have been fortunate to travel to many different places, seen lots of great things, but made a few mistakes along the way, which I have learned from. I want to bring together on this website the advice and tips I have learned from my experiences, and I hope that this will help you in your own next adventure.

My First Big Trip

On my first big trip I went to Asia, and I travelled to a number of countries in South East and Asia Pacific region. I went to Thailand first, to try out a CELTA course to see if I enjoyed teaching and living in Asia. I went there to escape a job that was going downhill.
While in Asia, I got to see some amazing sights and meet some lovely people. It was a great time in my life where I got to experience new things beyond the UK, which I'd recommend to anyone and everyone. I stayed in hostels in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Japan and they all had something different to offer. There were lots of occasions to explore, go out drinking, try local food and chill out and chat with others in the hostels.

I've also travelled around central and eastern Europe following a redundancy, where a holiday booking turned into a one-way adventure. This is where I started to try out Couchsurfing, where you get to stay with locals, and you pay in sharing each other’s culture and stories.

A couple of years ago I went to a wedding in Colombia, and even though I have travelled before, I still found this a bit of a daunting experience.

I had heard lots of rumours and scare stories about Colombia and I didn’t know what to believe. There were still things I probably should have packed, and other information would have been useful to know ahead of time.
For example, knowing how to adjust to the currency, so as to avoid being ripped off without realising it.

I want you to have a good idea of what you need to think about, what to pack, and where to find out the details and get ready for your next trip. This is where this website comes in, and even if you don't need anything on here, or don't have a trip planned, you might be inspired by my stories.

What I've Learned

I've learned to respect cultural differences, even if I disagree with them, be more patient and understanding with others, and to plan ahead. Travel is not always that cheap and there are risks, of course, to be aware of.  Planning ahead, being creative, and trusting your gut instincts is a big part of what helps you to stay safe.

Mission Statement

I plan to make this site as useful to you as possible by helping you to be prepared for your next trip. Ideally, I would have blogs for all types of travellers and destinations in over 20 different countries. I'm looking to include other people's blogs into my website as well, please do get in touch if you're interested.

Things such as good deals on trains and flights such as Virgin Atlantic, who I would recommend as they provide a great service and care about the environment.

Shopify has helped me become more knowledgeable about building websites and marketing, and I would like to help others who plan to build a website - especially if you're interested in travel or the environment. I have my own business called BWR Web Design which, as you can probably tell, is where I help businesses make websites.

I hope that this website help you get prepared for your next adventure and this journey is as valuable to you as it is to me.

Many thanks,
